Seeing Red

As seen here, bed bug bites are characterized by red, welt-like bumps on the skin. They can cause any number of related issues, including allergic reactions, skin infections, mental distress, and, rarely, anaphylactic shock. An especially interesting and worrisome feature of bed bug bites is that you often do not see or feel the damage until long after it is done. That’s because bed bugs first inject you with an anesthetic before hungrily slurping your blood.

Other Tell Tale Signs

Bedroom bugs can be difficult to notice, so knowledge about how they look and behave is crucial in detecting them as soon as possible. Because they are flat and about the size of an apple seed, bed bugs can invade your home from almost anywhere. Drawn to warm, dark places near human hosts, they are also not simply relegated to living on mattresses; they can be found in furniture, clothing, carpets and many more places. Furthermore, they can live for almost a year in a home with a nominal temperature and adequate food supply. Add this to the fact that they can fully infest a house within 3–4 months, so it’s easy to see how bed bugs can get out of control. Other things to consider include:

Bed bugs can travel on bags, people, and suitcases or be transferred from used furniture.
Bed bugs leave dark spotting and staining on sheets, mattresses, pillows, and clothing. The staining is from excrement and blood left by crushed bed bugs.
A sweet, musty smell is often associated with bed bug infestation.
Most bed bugs come out for meals at night and feed exclusively on blood. Their bites on humans can feel and even look similar to a mosquito bite.

The best way to know for certain if you have bed bugs is to get an inspection. This way, you’ll know exactly what you’re dealing with, and we can prepare the best course of action. The best inspection to have is a CERTIFIED K-9 inspection. We can “Pre Sniff” your home, motels, hotels, commercial, and municipal properties. Defense & Treatment

Like they say in football, your best defense is a strong offense, so make the necessary moves to keep bed bugs out of your house as much as possible. First, do regular inspections, especially after traveling or when guests leave your home. The same is true for furniture: inspect them regularly, especially any second-hand pieces you might bring into your home. Finally, even though bed bug infestations have nothing to do with cleanliness, it still helps to remove clutter as doing so gives them fewer places to hide.

As for treatment, your best option is to get professional treatment, but you have to choose carefully because not all companies and treatments are the same. Chemical applications, for example, are used only as a method of contact killing, which means they only kill the visible bed bugs and not the entire infestation. Our first experience with Bennett Pest Control was approximately 4 years ago when we encountered our first “bed bug infestation” when a tenant moved out of a rental home. We had called a number of Pest Control companies who used a chemical treatment and would need to treat for 2-4 months. After calling Bennett Pest Control and meeting with Bruce, he explained the heat treatment, the cost, and the down time.

The heat treatment would kill everything in the home (ie; roaches, ants, spiders, bedbugs and their eggs) down time would be 6-8 hours, and cost was less than one month’s rent. Still, not sure as what to do, Bruce said “Let’s do this house, if you still are not convinced, or we have to come back for any reason, we will discount the cost.” We will also guarantee our work, and have a canine inspection upon completion.

Needless to say, the ONLY people I call when there is any signs or even a “maybe possible” sign of a bedbug when completing a move out inspection is Bennett Pest Control . They are fast, courteous, professional, and less expensive than having 2+ months of down time with no guarantee. We have never had to have Bennett Pest Control go back to re-treat. It is always 100% pest free after one treatment.

Mike, with Bennett pest control, has been Servicing my condo in Ocean City, Maryland since 2018. One thing that I love about Bennett is that they will assign you a technicians and then you have continuity with the same serving technician. Mike is very thorough. He also explains the products used and if I see any activity he is very good at finding where the creepy crawlers might be gaining access’s and also at eliminating the problem. Mike is always punctual and arrives during the scheduled time. He will call ahead to let us know he’s on his way too. I have been extremely pleased with Bennett pest control over the last 7 years. I have never once had a problem with the company or Mike as my technician. If my schedule needs to have the appointment changed they are very accommodating too.
